The skin has many other functions as well and protects against, among other things:
•    Water
•    Uncontrolled water loss
•    Ultraviolet light
•    Germs

The skin is the border with the outer world, which protects us from “invasion“ by environmental influences, that is, “makes us impermeable“. When our skin barrier is badly damaged, e.g. when a burn or cauterization occurs, the body loses a great deal of water by way of the skin. Burn victims can lose up to 30 Liters per day through the skin surface. However, even with an intact skin barrier the skin is not absolutely impermeable. Even without considering the sweat glands, we lose ca. 300ml of water daily through our skin. This water loss is also known as transepidermal water loss (TEWL).TEWL can show the doctor or researcher whether the skin barrier is intact or damaged.
